How close everything is

Nothing in Slovenia is more than a morning from Ljubljana.

Start with the big six

The days Slovenia is known for.

A lake with a church on an island, a cave you ride a train into, a river the colour of bottle glass. Six days carry most Slovenian itineraries, and each one books differently.

The Bled day

Lake Bled: three ways to spend it.

All Bled tours →
★★★★★★★★★★4.9· 1,015 travellers on the most-booked Bled run

The lake is a 6km walk around and half a day if you rush it. What changes is how you cross the water, whether you climb for the postcard view, and how much of the Bohinj valley you bolt on afterwards.

The classic

Pletna across to the island, 99 steps up

Half day· from $45· boat included

A flat-bottomed pletna rowed by hand since the 1700s, then the stairs to the church and the bell you ring for a wish. Cream cake on the promenade after.

The gorge day

Vintgar boardwalk and the Bohinj valley

8–10h· from $70· small group

A kilometre of planks pinned to the rock above the Radovna, then the quieter lake at Bohinj and the Savica falls if the legs are willing.

The view

Off the ridge, over the lake

2–3h· from $150· tandem

Up the mountain road behind the lake, a few running steps, and Bled turns into the map you have been looking at all week. Weather calls it, not the clock.

Ljubljana

Ljubljana is small on purpose.

Two hundred thousand people, a car-free centre, dragons on the bridge and a castle on the hill above it. The river does the work an old town square does elsewhere: you walk one bank, eat on the other, and the whole city is done in a long afternoon.

Underground

The Karst gave the world the word for cave country.

Postojna runs an electric train two kilometres into the hill before you walk a step, and keeps olms — blind, pale, cave-dwelling amphibians — in a tank at the far end. Škocjan does the opposite: no train, a footbridge slung across a canyon so large the river below sounds distant. Predjama wedges a castle into the mouth of a cave and dares you to find the front door.

Budget first

What a day out in Slovenia costs.

Three price bands, and what each one buys you. Slovenia undercuts the Alps on either side of it, and the gap is widest in the middle band.

80 tours

316 tours

The full day out: Bled and Bohinj together, rafting with kit, cave-and-castle pairs.

$150 and up
201 tours

Private drivers, canyoning with a guide to yourself, tandem flights, whole-day wine roads.

Only here

Three things Slovenia has and nowhere else does.

The lakes and the mountains have rivals across the border. A blind cave salamander, a 440-year-old horse stud and a mountain village of shepherds’ huts do not.

Postojna

The Human Fish

Slovenes call it the human fish: a pale, blind, lungless salamander that lives its entire century-long life in cave water and can go years between meals. Postojna keeps a small colony in a darkened tank at the end of the tour, and in 2016 one of them laid eggs on camera and became national news. Nothing else in Europe looks remotely like it.

Founded 1580

The Lipizzaners

Every Lipizzaner in the world traces back to a limestone pasture above the Karst, where the Habsburgs set up a stud farm in 1580 and never moved it. The foals are born dark and lighten over years, so the paddocks hold black, grey and white horses of the same breed at once. The morning training sessions are the ones worth timing a visit around.

Above Kamnik

The Herdsmen’s Plateau

Velika Planina is a high meadow above Kamnik covered in low oval huts with shingled roofs almost to the ground — a shepherds’ settlement still worked in summer, not a museum. Herders drive cattle up in June and make sour milk and cheese in the same huts. A cable car does the climbing; the mist does the rest.

Plan backwards

Book these before you fly to Slovenia.

Most of Slovenia can be arranged from your guesthouse the night before. These cannot — they run on timed entry, snow gates and a season that closes.

  1. 01Lakes Bled & Bohinj and Vintgar Gorge Small-Group Day Trip from LjubljanaTimed-entry tickets for a one-way boardwalk, and the gorge closes for winter.
  2. 02Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle Tickets and TourThe cave train runs to a fixed timetable and the language-group slots fill first.
  3. 03Canyoning in Susec CanyonA water-level season, roughly spring to early autumn — and wetsuit sizes are booked, not stocked.
  4. 04Soča Valley Tour & Kranjska Gora Valley TourThe pass over to the Soča is shut by snow for months; operators re-route rather than cancel.
When it rains

Slovenian rain is a reason to go underground.

The Julian Alps make their own weather and the coast gets the tail of Adriatic storms. It matters less here than almost anywhere: the caves sit at a steady 10°C wet or dry, the Karst wine cellars are cut into the same rock, and a Ljubljana food tour spends most of its time indoors anyway.
